Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the point of dancing as an Amoeba?
In the experience of an Amoeba, there is but one entity relating to itself. We use the metaphor of an Amoeba as we explore the movement meditation through connecting as one. Ultimately, our intention is to be completely in the moment, without our various ego identities (e.g. gender, sexual preference, race, age, and so on), Rather, we are looking to experience a loving oneness within the amoeba. This practice stimulates the production of oxytocin, the hormone of connection.
2. What if there's someone at Amoeba Dance with whom I feel uncomfortable making contact?
There's a few ways to approach this situation. We suggest you look at your discomfort with curiosity to see if it's important for you to avoid making contact with that person. If needed, you can take care of yourself by making sure to stay away from that person in the amoeba and dance venue. And, of course, you always have the option to leave the event.
3. Is this an appropriate experience for someone who has had touch trauma?
Yes, the Amoeba can be soothing to touch trauma. However, it might not be appropriate for you if you find it difficult to feel safe in crowded situations and/or have strong trigger reactions to different kinds of touch. We encourage you to care for yourself before and after the container of the dance in responsible ways as well as to give yourself space to just witness when feeling overstimulated in the amoeba.
4. Is this an environment where it is OK to run erotic energy?
No. If you start feeling erotic or sexual energy arise, we require you take a break from the amoeba until it subsides.
